Mother Tongue Languages
Department Focus
The Mother Tongue Languages (MTL) department seeks to adopt innovative teaching and learning strategies to build a solid foundation in students for the learning of Mother Tongue Languages as well to cultivate in students a strong interest in their respective Mother Tongue languages and cultures.
Curriculum
In Damai Secondary School, the MTL teachers adopt various teaching pedagogies and infuse ICT components into daily MTL lessons. The department strives to equip students with crucial language and cultural competencies to help widen their horizon and enable them to tap into opportunities in the regional and global environment in the future.

Signature Programmes
MTL Fortnight Activities & Language Camp
The objectives of these activities are:
1) To create a conducive environment to promote MTL usage and learning beyond MTL lessons
2) To provide opportunities for students to enhance their knowledge and instill a passion towards their Mother Tongue language and culture
This year, Damai Secondary School conducted a range of activities related to MTL and cultures for the students to participate in. Among these activities were hands-on sessions on Chinese Tea Appreciation, making traditional kuehs, making shadow puppets etc.

Reading Programmes
The MTL department believes in the importance of instilling in students the passion for reading and enhancing their language ability through writing. This year, the department organised a mini book fair to encourage students to purchase story books for their own reading.

Cultural Performance Exposure Scheme (CPES)
The CPES “文化随意门” 计划 is an initiative by the school to promote Chinese Language Learning through exposing students to Chinese Language-related cultural performances and programmes by local and foreign artistes. To enhance the learning experience for students, the Chinese Language unit arranges for Chinese Language classes to view cultural performances in theatre.
Bengkel Rentas Ilmu 2019 (ML)
Bengkel Rentas Ilmu is a workshop that was organised for the Secondary 4 & 5 Malay Language students from different secondary schools in the cluster. Teachers were invited to share different examination skills with the students to prepare them for their National Mother Tongue Language Examinations.
